A Great Leader - Mahatma Gandhi

Introduction-
Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader, a saint and a great social reformer.
He is also known as the “Father of the Nation or Bapu”. His full name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was a great freedom fighter who spent his whole life in struggle for the independence of India.
Mahatma Gandhi is called as Mahatma because of his great works and greatness all through the life.
‘Mahatma’ is a Sanskrit word which means ‘great soul’and Rabindranth Tagore first used the word ‘Mahatma’ for Gandhi.

Early Life-
Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2nd of October in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat in a Hindu family. His Father name was Karamchand Gandhi and his mother name was Putali bai. He completed his schooling in India and went to England for further study of law and later he went to South Africa to practice his law. Later he returned to India in as a lawyer in 1890.
Mohandas was married to Kasturba Makanji, Gandhi ji has four chidren Harilal Gandhi, Manilal Gandhi, Ramdas Gandhi and Devdas Gandhi


Role in Indenepnce movenment-
Gandhi ji was a great freedom fighter and non-violent activist.
When Gandhi ji were in South Africa, he got differentiated from the light skin people because of being a dark skin person. That’s why he decided make changes in such unfair laws,He returned to India in as a lawyer in 1890 and started a non-violent movement to make India an independent country. He inspired lots of Indians to work against British rule for their own independence.
He led the Salt March (Namak Satyagrah or Salt Satyagrah or Dandi March) and broke the salt law of Brtitish rule in 1930.
Few main movenment started by Gandhi ji-
1- In 1920,Gandhi started Non-cooperation movement.
2- In 1930, Gandhi ji started Civil Disobedience movement.
3- Quit India movement on 8th August 1942.
All the movements had shaken the British rule in India and inspired lots of common Indian citizens to fight for the freedom.
He got insulted many times but he continued his non-violent struggle for the Independence of India. He got arrested and sent to jail many times but he continued fighting against British rule for the justice of Indians.


Social Life-
Gandhi ji was a great freedom fighter and non-violent activist.
He understood the power of unity in people,he worked hard for the removal of the untouchability in the Indian society, upliftment of the backward classes in India, raised voice to develop villages for social development, inspired Indian people to use swadeshi goods and other social issues. He used the word “Harijan” means the people of God for the peoples for backword category.
He inspired Indian people for the manual labour and said that arrange all the resource ownself for living a simple life and becoming self-dependent. He started weaving cotton clothes through the use of Charakha in order to avoid the use of videshi goods and promote the use of Swadeshi goods among Indians.
Gandhi strongly favoured the emancipation of women, and urged "the women to fight for their own self-development." He was pious, truthful and religious. He believed in simple living and high thinking. Every body who came in contact with him were so deeply influenced by his personality.
Gandhi showed India and the World the path of truth and non-violence.

Conclusion-
Mandhi ji was a very simple person who worked to remove the colour barrier and caste barrier.
He was not born as great but he made himself great through his hard struggles and works.
He showed us a way to live with non-violence, truth, love and fraternity.
Mahatma Gandhi always believed that weapons are not the only answer for any problem; in fact they created more problems than they solved.
